2nd Coldest U.S. Winter in 35 Years

Dr. Roy Spencer

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

The primary winter months of December, January, and February averaged over the contiguous 48 United States constitute the 2nd coldest winter in the last 35 years. The average temperature of 32.2 deg. F was barely edged out by the slightly colder winter (32.0 deg. F) of 2009-2010 (click for large version):

Winter 2014 Temps US

The analysis is based upon ~350 NOAA/NWS stations that measure temperatures every 6 hours (or more frequently), many located at airports. The data I use are adjusted for average spurious urban heat island (UHI) warming that increases with population density around the thermometer site. That relationship is shown at the end of this article.

The analysis starts in only 1973 since that is the first year with a large amount of quality-controlled 6-hourly temperature data archived at NOAA. The official NOAA temperature product (not yet announced) in contrast depends upon stations which generally don’t report hourly temperatures (mostly daily max/min temperatures), and which require large (and controversial) adjustments for varying time of observation.

Note also that 6 of the last 8 winters have been below the 41-year average

Support Obama’s Reelection?

2008 -US ranked first in competitiveness. 2012 ranked seventh.

Jan. 2009-National Debt $10.6 Trillion. Jan 2013 Debt $16.3 Trillion.

2008 -135 million employed. 2012 4 million fewer employed despite 13 million more Americans.

2008- Obama condems Iraq War.  Ignores how Bush’s badly handled war did lead to Arab democracy movements, an Iraq that can play a constructive role in the Middle East and broke the back of Al Queda’s attempt to control areas of Iraq.  Obama endorses Afghan War, however.

2012- Obama takes credit for Bin Laden’s assassination in 2011 which was the result of a 9 1/2 year campaign. Remains mired in Afghanistan with few real gains over last 4 years. We are about to enter year 12 of the Afghan mess.

2008- US already in a recession. Bush and Obama administrations respond with huge deficit financed stimulus and government spending. Bernanke’s Federal Reserve totally blows away precedent in his attempts to force money into the system to get the economy going. Interest rates far below the inflation rate become “structural”.

2012 3 1/2 years of Obama’s spending and Fed money injections and the US again totters on the edge of a recession. Weakest economic recovery in 75 years not remedied by big government Obama administration.

2012- US rankes 30th in Educational achievement. US ranked 2nd behind Switzerland in dollars spend per student. Obama promises status quo while nation’s education system stagnates under the weight of special interest and low expectations.

2008- Healthcare Cost Per Person $6500. 2012 $7500. 2nd most expensive healthcare system in the world.
